Sometimes, you may see a woman wearing a beautiful ring on her pinky and it may make you wonder why she is wearing it. Then again, you may see it had not given it much thought.
In reality, there is actually something that is typically going on behind the scenes when you see a woman wearing the ring on her pinky. It is a type of promise ring, but not the promise ring that is between a woman and her intended significant other. It’s a different type of promise.
This promise is actually a ‘pinky promise,’ which is considered to be a very sacred and binding commitment. It’s an old expression but it is still one that even as adults, we try to honor.
Fred + Far is a jewelry maker run by two women they are the ones who started the pinky ring movement. They had the idea of celebrating how your individuality was important, regardless of whether you’re in a relationship or not.
One of the founders, Melody Godfrey, said that she had a specific need in this regard to care for herself. She was a mother of twins and found that she was always neglecting herself to care for others.
Along with her co-founder, Samira Far, they designed the pinky ring to be a symbol of empowerment and a way to commit to yourself.
Godfrey said: “I chose to create the ring for my pinky because it is a finger I’ve never worn a ring on before. It is as overlooked as women can be in their own lives. It felt very powerful to me to take a traditional symbol of commitment to someone else (big bold engagement rings) and say, ‘This time, I’m choosing myself.’ I still wear my engagement ring proudly, and these two rings are not mutually exclusive. Because loving yourself, makes you better able to love someone else.”
